The 22nd title in the publisher's series of annuals devoted to the study, teaching and writing of Scottish literature, this one a selection from the seventy-one primarily imaginary conversations set in William Ambrose's Edinburgh taverns, and printed in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine from 1822 until 1835. The individuals engaging in these imaginary conversations include James Hogg, Byron, and Thomas De Quincey. This selection "includes four complete noctes, one complete scene, and twenty-four brief extracts, " featuring such authors as John Gibson Lockhart, William Maginn, and John Wilson, covering such topics as "the contemporaneous literary, artistic, and political scene, the 1822 Visit of George IV to Edinburgh, swimming in the Firth of Forth, and gargantuan feastings and potations."
